The 2017 hunting season has been great so far. A lot of top quality trophy animals has been taken and wonderful times around the camp fire was experienced! Although the rainy season is not yet upon us and the grass remains brown the animals are in good condition.

1. Monster Kudu taken in Swaziland
In our previous newsletter we mentioned that we have a new concession area in Swaziland which hasn’t been hunted for 7 years. This concession area has excellent Kudu, Nyala and other game like Impala and Grey Duiker. In late August we hunted this Monster Kudu of 58 and 2/8 inch Kudu on the area as well as a 4.5 inch Grey Duiker.
This is on top of a 54” and 56” kudu that we took there earlier this year!
2. Harloo also provided some excellent Mountain Reedbuck this August.
The Rowland ward minimum for Mountain Reedbuck is 6 7/8 inches. Two were taken in August 2017 which were over 7 inches – and should easily make SCI gold!
3. Poachers entered again.
Since the previous incident in December 2016 poaching was very quiet.
On 7th July 2017 my Game Guards patrolling the fence line saw activity and people crossing the fence from Swaziland to Harloo. They also picked up an empty shell from a shotgun. Because of all our previous incidents he immediately knew that Swazi Poachers were going to hassle us again.
We decided to put up a base camp on Harloo, close to the Swazi Border in the vicinity where they usually enter – in order to do night patrols.
On the 18th July 2017 my Game Guards called me per radio at around 21H00 and told me that they saw a light, and that I must come and help.
We approached them quietly in pitch darkness with my Flir night vision, until we were very close and that was when I shined my light on them.
I saw a guy with an impala on his back. He started screaming and threw the impala to the ground while he started running. The other guy then shot at us from a distance and we shot back in self-defence. On the scene we found a single-shot shotgun, an empty shotgun cartridge, cane knife a light and the Impala that was shot. The reason for this incident is most probably hunger, as the people in the area has lost hundreds of cattle and goats due to the prolonged and severe drought. But I don’t think they will easily consider a take away at Harloo again in the near future!

4. Weather conditions
Since May 14 we haven’t had any rain. The veld is dry and food are scares but the animal’s condition is still good. We need rain urgently or we are going to experience the same disaster than last year this time. Unfortunately we have no choice than to start feeding the animals. We are expecting our first rain in October which is still a long ways out. We haven’t lost a single animal yet because of this drought but if it was not for us feeding it would have been a different story.
5. End of the 2017 season
Harloo Safaris have one more hunt left and then it will be the end of our season. This season has been good for us and we are truly thankful for the good business. We would like to use this opportunity to thank each and everybody that contributed to Harloo’ s success weather you hunted with us long ago or just recently. The money you spend on safari with us contribute hugely to game management, conservation, farm maintenance and providing work for 15 people.

It's important to compare apples when looking at a package, and not the amount or number of animals included! Nyala generally sell for $2300 each and up, so for one Nyala up to 6 "cheaper" species can be added to make it look good.
